Making the leap from 2D to 3D viewing can be a daunting task. Outside of the sticker shock at the cash register for the set, the additional cost of purchasing half a dozen glasses can really be a turn off. Samsung is taking aim at solving this conundrum with their new glasses-free 55 inch 3D LCD, currently on display at FPD China 2011.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s make this clear — Samsung is still several years away from commercializing this set. With that being said, here’s the skinny on the details. At FDP China 2011 today, Samsung unveiled the 55-inch beauty and explained the set has been developed to be seen in public places. The 3D content can be viewed without glasses from nine different viewpoints ranging in distance from 2.5 to 6 meters.
Here’s a rundown of the technical details of the TV. Brightness is 500cd/m2, contrast ratio is 4000:1, the set runs at full HD resolution and provides easy switching between 2D and 3D content. Since the set on display in China is a prototype, it is using CFL backlighting, but Samsung says the retail units will be LED backlit.
