solid state drives seagateWith the exception of the new 3TB Constellation ES.2 hard drive, all of Seagate’s 2011 product announcements this afternoon consisted of 2.5-inch for factor drives. Cache has been boosted across the board from 16MB to 64MB and all of the new drives come with a self-encryption option. Bottom line, expect performance and capacity improvements between 50 and 100 percent.

Seagate’s new enterprise SSDs are based on Samsung’s 32 nanometer NAND flash curcuit technology. The two featured drives are the single-level cell (SLC) Pulsar XT.2 and the multi-level cell (MLC) Pulsar.2. The Pulsar XT.2 offers 10 times the endurance of MLC-based NAND flash, offers a 5-year warranty and comes in 100GB, 200GB and 400GB capacities with 6Gbit/sec SAS interface. Sequential read/writes speeds are 360MB/sec and 300MB/sec respectiviely, with an average seek response time of ~10 milliseconds.

The Pulsar.2 is the first MLC-based SSD built for the enterprise by “an enterprise-class vendor”. Like the Pulsar XT.2, the Pulsar.2 features a 6Gbit/sec SAS interface and the average failure rate(AFR) has dropped from .55% to .44%. No performance speeds were announced for the Pulsar.2 just yet.
