The iPad 2 is just a couple of weeks away from going on sale in the UK. Junaio is an augmented reality browser, and boy is it incredible. This is one step beyond Layar, using image recognition on newspapers, posters and adverts. Read on for more info, and click through for the full video showing off the Junaio AR browser.

Junaio is built by German company Metaio. Metaio’s CTO Peter Meier says: “AR will become a part of our daily lives, when AR experiences meet people, where they spend most their time: inside their homes or inside their workspaces.”

As well as information about your surroundings, Junaio has also built partnerships that expand its AR capabilities. One smartphone partnership with a German TV show allowed viewers to participate in a quiz, get feedback and compare scores. In the demo there’s a particularly impressive bit of AR that reads an image from the newspaper and shows gameplays from an American football match.

Junaio is already available for iPhone and on Android, but the iPad 2 specific version is not available yet. Its creators say it’s on the way, and should be here “pretty soon”.
