Gears of War is to make the move from gung-ho cover based shooter to, er, gung ho cover based boardgame. It says here. Is a Gears of War boardgame on the way? Really?
There has reportedly been a board game based on the adventures of Marcus Fenix and his band of happy chappies for a couple of years now – or at least a company is know to have bought the rights. We assumed it was dead in the water but – look! – the company turned up at the Penny Arcade Expo over the weekend to claim otherwise.
Fantasy Flight is the company in question, which has form producing board games versions of Sid Meier’s Civilization and Space Hulk. Their stand at PAX carried those games, plus a banner for Gears Of War. A spokesperson confirmed that they were not ready to announce anything yet but that something was coming.. soon.
We do have our doubts about how well such a fast-paced, bloody game as Gears of War will translate to the traditionally more sedate world of counters and action cards (“Double Six! Take one Kerb Stomp card and eviscerate the player to your left!”) but if Angry Birds can become a board game then we say why not give it a go?
