ps3-move

The PlayStation Move‘s just had its doors pulled wide open for business by Sony. A new service, Move.me, has just been revealed by the gaming giant, which lets hackers, researchers and the like start programming games and programs that make use of the motion control wand, the PS3 and PC.

While Microsoft has been quick to legitimise Kinect hacking, Sony’s now embracing developers, tinkerers and scientists too. Its new Move.me is a server application that lets you use the PlayStation Move as an input device: what you whip up after that is up to you, but Sony’s hoping that games focusing on “fitness and nutrition”, “physical therapy” and “creative arts” will be high in the agenda.

We can certainly see the broad scope this move provides. As we said in our PlayStation Move review last year, we found it to be “the closest we’ve seen to 1:1 in motion control gaming so far, and when you find a game that uses the tech properly…[it] will really make you marvel at its potential.”

Sony is making Move.me for PlayStation Move available for download sometime this Spring on the PlayStation Network – at an unspecified price – but if you want, you can apply for early access over at the Move.me site. Don’t get too down if you don’t get in though: we wouldn’t be surprised if you need a .ac email address right now. You know how Sony feels about hackers.
