Eagle-eyed bargain hunters will already have spotted that since the launch of the iPad 2 last night, the original iPad has dropped to a starting price of £329. Bargainous. In fact, that’s so cheap it’s now undercutting some of the new Android tablets, and comes close to some of the super budget Android tablets that we saw flooding the market a couple of months ago.

The iPad is now £100 cheaper than it was before the iPad 2 launched. That means the iPad is now cheaper than the Motorola Xoom, which starts at £450 for the 32GB Wi-fi only version, and only around £80 more than the Advent Vega.

Given the specs of the original iPad, we reckon this makes it one of the best deals out there when it comes to investing in a tablet. Sure, it’ll be superseded by a new version in a couple of weeks, but it’s still a better deal than the identikit £250 Android Froyo tablets, and is a darn sight cheaper than the next gen of Android tablet.

If you’re anti-Apple or an Android flag-waver, does this new price drop make you think twice about getting an Android tablet, or will you be sucked into Apple’s glare with this cheap iPad pricing?

wtf? Can someone explain this to me?
“Given the specs of the original iPad, we reckon this makes it one of the best deals out there when it comes to investing in a tablet” – no it isn't – any “decent” device out there is better.

“Sure, it’ll be superseded by a new version in a couple of weeks, but it’s still a better deal than the identikit £250 Android Froyo tablets”
It already is superseeded by most decent tablets out there… And why would someone use $499 price – convert it to £ and still consider this as a better deal than a tablet already available and costing £250 in the UK?

and is a darn sight cheaper than the next gen of Android tablet.
Well – no… it isn't … comparing 16GB, WiFi only tablet with shit specs to highend tablets is wrong in the first place… compare similar spec to similar spec and you will see that you get more with android devices…

Why do I even write this? You will soon use the killer-argument…
It's got an apple logo on it…

I disagree completely. Content is king, and Apple tablets have better content than most Android tablets available now because most Android tablets available now don't have Android Market. This is a big deal for consumers.

And to compare similar specs: the only thing available that comes close right now is the Galaxy Tab, and that costs an arm and a leg, is 7″, and runs Froyo. I think the iPad is better than the Tab.

Android tablets that have been announced but aren't available yet could change this, but they've not hit the market yet. Therefore right now the original iPad is the best deal, because of the price, specs and content. Not because “it's got an Apple logo on it”.

Which tablets has it been bested by? That you can actually buy, in the UK, today? Genuinely intrigued to know (By the way, I am an enormous Android fan).

I'd also quite like to draw a line in the sand between 7 and 10-inch tablets. They sound similar, but in reality one is twice the size of the other, so you can't always compare a Galaxy Tab to an iPad. That said, we don't know many people who have the money for both (or either), so having to choose between them is still a valid comparison.
