Analyst: Apple will ship 40m iPads in 2011

March 2nd, 2011

Apple is expected to ship between 6 and 6.5 million units of iPad and iPad 2 in the first quarter of 2011, heading for a total of around 40 million for the calendar year, according to a DigiTimes report. Initial supplies will be ramped up as the year goes on, the report says. Read on to find out by how many.

Citing industry insiders, the report claims Apple ordered between 1.7 and 2 million iPads for January and February, upping to just above 2 million for March, in time for the iPad 2 launch. That doesn’t seem that much of an increase to us, hinting maybe Apple thinks demand won’t be as fervent as expected.

Between 1 and 1.5 million iPads were in the channel in January, according to the report, and it added that Apple is “already set to phase out the first-generation iPad and let iPad 2 take its place.”

What do you reckon to those numbers? A little low, or right on the money? Let us know your comments. And stay locked for the first official word on iPad2 tonight.

This is not a surprise. With millions of people being intrigued by what the iPad 2 has for it to be really magnetic, it is really a sure thing for Apple.
