Let’s be honest, bigger is better when it comes to bits and bytes. Bigger screens, bigger storage, you name it we want it. Valve has decided the same is true for gaming and plans to bring its online gaming service to your television. Steam for TV is the real deal, here’s the scoop.
Microsoft might be poised for the lion’s share of announcements at GDC this week, but Valve is looking to be a close second. The creator of some of our favorite and coincidentally best-selling game franchises wants to unveil “big picture” mode for Steam. “Big picture” mode will bring controller support and navigation designed specifically for TVs. Here’s what Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing for Valve had to say:
“Our partners and customers have asked us to make Steam available in more places. With the introduction of Steam on the Mac, and soon in Portal 2 on the PS3, we’ve done just that. With big picture mode, gaming opportunities for Steam partners and customers become possible via PCs and Macs on any TV or computer display in the house.”
Steam “big picture” mode will certainly be a highlight of GDC in San Francisco this week. With Portal 2 being the first title to feature Steam on the Playstation 3 and opening the door for broad cross-platform play between PC, Mac and PS3, we might be moving closer to the perfect gaming ecosystem.
So let’s hear it. Anyone else chomping at the bit for a chance to bring Steam to the big screen with “big picture” mode? The real question is how will TVs be able to support the hardware required to deliver adequate frames per second without turning our LED sets into thick displays? We’ll see in a matter of days.
