Toshiba Places preview

Toshiba Places, Toshiba’s internet media service for TVs and other net connected gizmos, has been knocking around for quite some time now, but the first devices supporting it won’t be coming to the UK until May. With this in mind, we thought we’d run down some of smarter features of the service – check them out here and see what Apple’s iTunes team could learn a thing or two from.

Toshiba has been dabbling in glasses-free 3D TV for a while now, but today at the company’s UK Spring launch, we got a peek at a glasses-free 3D laptop, or auto-steroscopic if you want to get technical on us.

The twist is the laptop is capable of tracking your eyes via the webcam (which will use infra-red in the dark too), and adjusting the angle for the parallax accordingly, so you see a 3D picture wherever you move – which incidentally can use the full screen, or show in a window on an otherwise 2D desktop, which is a nice touch. Read on for the details and photos.

What do we have here? We just slapped eyes on the Toshiba UL and Toshiba SL series TVs, two unannounced LED TVs that’ll be the first to run Toshiba’s media centre software, Toshiba Places, in the UK. Toshiba’s keeping most of the specs close to its chest until IPTV content partners are signed on, but we know they’re both 1080p 100Hz models with Wi-Fi and DLNA-certified, with Freeview HD tuners.

We’re particularly taken by the Toshiba UL TV’s silver and black finish, but the important thing is Toshiba’s cloud based Places service, which should give Samsung’s TV Apps service a run for its money. We’ll have a preview of Toshiba Places for you shortly, but expect these two to go on sale in May in a range of sizes.

Toshiba Satellite R850: meet the Portege's bigger brother

The Toshiba Satellite R850 has been unveiled today, and it’s got a healthy dose of design from its smaller, skinnier sibling, the Toshiba Portege R830. While it’s not quite as ludicrously anorexic, the 15.6-inch machine is still only 25.4mm thick tapering down to 20.8mm – it’s also sporting an island keyboard with a numberpad to the right handside, plus a DVD drive and your choice of HDMI or DisplayPort connectivity – and of course one of Intel’s second gen Core processors humming away inside.

FoneHome.co.uk, one of Electricpig’s favourite cousins, has had a redesign. The new site has more specs and comparisons, and you can put phones head to head.

The reviews and information are all compiled by the FoneHome team, who’ve had their hands on every phone mentioned, so they know the strengths and weaknesses of each. You can also search by OS, by what’s most popular, and other specs like cameras and internal memory.
