As Killzone 3 officially went on sale in North America today, rumors began to circulate that Sony is hard at work developing an unhackable PS3. This new PS3 keeps the existing slim design, but adds a larger 300GB hard drive and an “undisclosed anti-hacking system”.
The saga known as the Geohot PS3 jailbreak has taken much of the gaming headlines for the better part of the month. Today, we found out that Geohot had raised a defense fund to battle Sony in just two days. Meanwhile, Killzone 3 torrents began to spread across the Internet like wild fire.
The battle against PS3 piracy is a daunting task. Currently, torrents for Marvel vs Capcom 3 and Killzone 3 have been widely available for over a week. For those willing to jailbreak their consoles, this spells trouble for Sony.
ING UK is reporting that “Sony are already deep into plans of developing a hack-proof PS3 system. This is mainly due to the recent leaks of Killzone 3 which has worried Sony of their console becoming a mainstream threat to piracy.”
The alleged unhackable PS3 adds a larger hard drive and an anti-hacking system, but maintains the current price point of £186.99/$300. For those following the legal route in the console wars it looks to be a win win situation. Jailbreakers lose the ability to play pirated games and the rest of us get a larger capacity drive for the same price point.
Let us know how a fresh new unhackable PS3 with a 300GB hard drive sounds. If they can improve the web browser, I wouldn’t mind picking up a spare console.
