The new MacBook Pro looks to be just around the corner, thanks to an Intel leak (Deja vu? Yup: just like last year, Intel may have leaked the new MacBook Pro again). While we love the current MacBook Pro, there’s a few things that need to change, and upgrades we want to see. Read on for our list of must haves.
Sandy Bridge CPU
The Intel Core CPU is the next step in processing power. It looks like we’re on to a good thing with this wish, as the Intel ad that leaked what might be the new MacBook Pro is an ad for Intel’s second generation Core i5 processor – it certainly seems like the most logical addition for Apple’s high performance laptop line.
USB ports
It’s not the number of USB ports that we’re bothered about, it’s the spacing between them. On the current MacBook Pro they’re so close together as to make it impossible to use a 3G dongle and a USB stick at the same time. This needs to change, for the good of our sanity.
HDMI out
It’s crazy that there are smartphones out there with HDMI out for hooking up to your flatscreen TV, and the MacBook Pro still doesn’t have one, despite the fact that a large part of its target demographic is folks working on graphics and video. Why should we have to settle for DisplayPort if even the new Mac Mini has HDMI?
Better graphics switching
Apple’s graphic card switching setup in the 2010 MacBook Pro refresh was a nice idea, but didn’t always work on practice, particularly when specific apps turned on the dedicated GPU for no real reason: yeah, TweetDeck doesn’t need a graphics card, but Apple seems to think so. Let’s have the option to customise the setup more, Nvidia Optimus style please.
Slimmer, black body
From the looks of the Intel ad, the new MacBook Pro could be donning its LBD and some Gok Wan approved control pants, slimming down and swapping the silver body for a matte black. We approve this move. More black equals fewer dirty marks.
