Stream Netflix and Hulu with Plex Media Server app for Android Previously limited to iOS devices, Plex Media Server for Android is now available from the Android Market for just $4.99. This media server solution brings together all of your downloaded movies, pictures and music to stream within your home — and now, your Android smartphone. Did we mention you can also access over a dozen online streaming sites such as Netflix, Hulu, Revision3 and Vimeo?

Here’s the scoop. First, you’ll need either a Mac or PC running the Plex Media Server software. Priced to sell, this free piece of software works very similar to Boxee — combining all of the media on your computer with music and video plugins, allowing access to online streaming content. The entire interface is remote friendly and if you have a home theater PC or Mac Mini connected to your TV, this is a program you want in your arsenal.

Does the Netflix streaming actually work? On the Plex Facebook, Plex has said that they themselves never touted Netflix or Hulu streaming, and that they can't say when it will become available for Android. The story that it can stream Netflix and Hulu came from third-party news sources, not from Plex. I wish reporters would try it out before falsely touting these features. If this reporter did in fact test it out, and successfully streamed Netflix, then I'll apologize and be excited to finally have Netflix on my HTC Incredible. Until then, this is false reporting.

And from the Plex Facebook page: “Just to confirm, Hulu/Netflix streaming will not be possible from the Windows version of the media server. Certain plug-ins require both the server and client to have specific capabilities, and not everything from the Mac version has made it over to the Windows side yet. This functionality will be added over time. However, we never claimed in either the Android Market description nor the blog post that this would be possible. The only place that either of those plug-ins are currently mentioned in relation to Windows is if you managed to find the non-public Media Server for Windows page. This page is still incomplete and contains placeholder images, as we haven't launched the product yet. If access to those services is your main reason for wanting Plex for Android, I suggest you hold off on your purchase, as we wouldn't want you to buy the app and be unhappy with it. Please keep checking in every so often though, as we intend to constantly improve the software, and will eventually offer feature parity between the Windows and Mac versions of the media server.”
