Preliminary fourth quarter 2010 worldwide mobile PC shipments have been released and to much surprise, Apple is now king. The Cupertino crew reportedly shipped 10.2 million units, resulting in a 17.2 percent market share. In a close second with 9.3 million units and 15.6 percent market share was HP.
Windows is clearly the dominating player in mobile PC shipments with four of the five brands running their OS. However, Apple maintains a loyal customer base — ready and willing to spend. Combined with a growing percentage of first-time Mac users, the company is experiencing tremendous growth.
At the other end of the spectrum you have HP who relies heavily on Windows 7, but thanks to the acquisition of Palm we’ll have plenty of webOS products later this year. The remaining players, Dell, Toshiba and Acer, also offer or plan to offer tablets in 2011.
With the introduction of the new MacBook Air, an update for the MacBook Pro line up, and the success of the iPad, it’s easy to see why Apple dominates mobile. 2011 will be the true test for Apple as CES 2011 revealed more than 50 new tablets coming to market.
So, now it’s time for you to chime in. Will Apple continue with top honors in worldwide mobile PC shipments in 2011, or will the growth of Android and webOS prove to powerful?
