We’re only just getting used to a world dominated by dual-core powerhouse smartphones. But NVIDIA has just dropped a bomb with its new Project Kal-El quad-core effort. Not only is it blisteringly fast, NVIDIA also says it’ll be sitting pretty inside smartphones this year! Read on for all the juicy details.

NVIDIA’s Kal-El can stream 1440p video on a 2560×1600 panel, which the chip maker reckons will work like a dream on 10.1-inch screen tablets. In an official blog post, NVIDIA said, “Our customers are getting samples now, and they’re planning production in August.”

That means tablets and phones rocking NVIDIA’s Project Kal-El chip will be on shelves well ahead of Qualcomm’s quad-core effort, which isn’t due out until 2012. It seems that phones are about to get a whole lot faster very soon indeed.
