No surprises here but Nokia CEO Stephen Elop just went on the record to say that Nokia “explored the opportunity with the Google ecosystem…there’s some attractive elements but our fundamental belief is that we would have difficulty differentiating.”

He went on to cite the problem of “commoditizing” and the race to the bottom with Android hardware as the reason Nokia partenered with Microsoft and its Windows Phone operating system instead.

There’s certainly some truth in that, and we can’t say we’re fans of most manufacturers’ attempts to make Andorid look and feel different from what Google intended, but whether the same isn’t true of Windows Phone 7, which offers an almost identical software experience across handsets, is still up for debate.

What do you think? Has Nokia made the right choice? Shout up in the comments.
