The Sonos Android app has been a long time coming, but today Sonos has announced the imminent arrival of its Android app, with a release slated for mid-March. Read on for more details.

The Sonos Android app has integration with hardware and built in capabilities of your Android device. It can use voice control navigation (a feature only present in the Android app) and the hardware volume control buttons can be used, as well as the on-screen volume bar.

It will work seamlessly with any Sonos product, whether you bought it last week or if you’re packing a vintage Sonos from ’05. There won’t be any ugly glitching with the rest of your household either – Sonos CEO John Macfarlane assured us that one user controlling via an iPhone and another using Android shouldn’t cause any problems.

The Sonos Android app is going into wide beta, and will be going live on the Android Market in mid-March. It’s optimised for versions of Android 2.1 and above.

We asked whether there would be an updated version of the app once Honeycomb gets bedded in. Macfarlane said: “We did an iPad app, so it wouldn’t be at all surprising, although we have nothing to announce. It’s very much like the early Nexus One days – it still isn’t settled yet, and that’s important – to know whether a 7-inch or 10-inch screen becomes dominant.”

However, it seems Sonos will be continuing to concentrate on Android. Macfarlane said: “We’re looking at all the smartphone operating systems, but our focus is on Android as it’s running away right now. We’re going to be keeping our focus on Android, and will be continually updating the iPhone app.”
