The iPad 2 is in production according to a report in the Wall Street Journal by Yukari Iwatani Kane and Shayndi Raice. Why write the journalists names? Because Kane has previously been shown to be a conduit for Apple controlled leaks. The report smells strongly of an Apple leak with limited but precise details and a sense of controlling expectations. Read on to see what the WSJ claims we’ll see in iPad 2…

The WSJ journal iPad 2 report says the device will be thinner and lighter than the first model and will have “at least one camera on the front of the device for features like video-conferencing but the resolution of the display will be similar to the first iPad”. When Kane and Raice say “these people said” we’d put money on that really meaning “these Apple PR people said”.

The iPad 2 details in the WSJ piece are all about managing expectations – they squash talk of a higher resolution display in iPad 2 and suggest that Apple may actually deliver only a single front-facing camera for FaceTime calls rather than a pair of cameras as posited by most iPad 2 rumours. The report also suggests we’ll be looking at a launch in March or April.

Apple is thought to have engaged in similar controlled leaks prior to the release of the original iPad which helped to make Steve Jobs’s revelation of a relatively low price point nicely surprising.
