The first step towards single subscriptions and bundled contract payments for mobile devices has come around today, with the news that Alcatel One Touch has partnered with French manufacturer Archos to bundle up an Android tablet with an Android smartphone.

The bundle lets users share a smartphone 3G connection with an Archos tablet via a built-in Wi-fi hotspot. The offer is open to “all telecom operators in Europe and the US” – meaning the companies involved are trying to get this out in as many places and spaces as they can.

This isn’t the first time Archos has tried to get into the smartphone game: back in 2009 it announced the Archos Phone Tablet, which never materialised for unexplained reasons.

This is a good idea. I'm not sure how well these relatively low-profile companies will get on, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see more of these kinds of contract turning up in the future. Most big phone manufacturers seem to be working on both tablets and phones at the moment. Seems likely they'll soon be bundling the two together.
