Xperia X10 and X8 update includes pinch to zoomThe highly anticipated update for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and X8 is now rolling out. According to the SE product blog, the update for the 2010 family of Xperia products can be done using PC-companion or via an over-the-air update, depending on your market. Alas, pinch to zoom is upon us.

There’s really two highlights to the Xperia update: the addition of some bi-directional language (Arabic, Farsi, Thai and Hebrew) and pinch to zoom, or as Sony Ericsson calls it “pinch/zoom touch”, for mobile Internet and Google Maps on the Xperia X10.

Pinch to zoom support for the Xperia X10 has been a difficult task, dating back to early November 2010. If you are curious as to what to expect from the functionality, take a peak at the video above. We’re not sure whether some third party games will include support (like the video shows), but we’ve got our fingers crossed.

Other improvements, market and operator dependent, include:

  • Moxier in an updated version (2.7.13) that includes a great overview widget for e-mail, calendar and tasks.
  • Moxier e-mail shown in Timescape.
  • Possibilities of trimming videos in the phone.
  • Videos are transcoded to fit into MMS-messages even if they were recorded in high quality.
  • Minor changes to Mediascape with access to “Now Playing” in the top right corner.

For the mini products and the Xperia X8, Sony Ericsson has enabled the ANT+ support in the chipset. ANT+ is a standard for short-range communication with things like heart rate monitors. The roll-out should start now from the Xperia X10 and “within a week or so for the other products”. Every kit needs different approvals before it can be released, so we recommend a bit of patience.

Anyone else excited to finally have pinch to zoom capability on the Xperia X10?
