The Daily, Rupert Murdoch’s iPad only newspaper is launching later today at 4pm UK time. Murdoch will be joined on stage by Eddy Cue, vice president of Internet Services at Apple. This will be the start of a brand spanking new newspaper sales model – how do you think it will fare?
Murdoch is well behind the iPad and has called it a “glimpse of the future”, and predicted The Daily to be the saving grace of newspapers, saying: “There’s going to be tens of millions of these things sold all over the world…It doesn’t destroy the traditional newspaper, it just comes in a different form.”
If you decide to subscribe to the iPad only The Daily, it will only be available via the iPad app, and you’ll pay for each issue, or a subscription, for The Daily to be delivered digitally to your iPad first thing in the morning.
There are no official prices yet, but the WSJ has said it will cost 99cents, the equivalent of 60p, although to find out whether it will be that cheap over on our shores we’ll have to wait until later today.
On top of the iPad only newspaper edition, The Daily will have its own free website: www.thedaily.com, which is currently showing a “coming soon” banner.
