A quick look at Nokia Ovi Maps 3.06

A quick look at Nokia Ovi Maps 3.06Making the our list of best Nokia apps for January was Ovi Maps 3.06, the latest edition of Nokia’s navigation software. One of the best features in version 3.06 is that you no longer need a computer or cable to download street maps. Here’s a rundown on the new features:

As I mentioned, Nokia Ovi maps 3.06 no longer requires a computer or data cable to download street maps. Maps can be downloaded directly to your device, saving time when it counts. Depending on the map data, the download may be large so Nokia recommends you use a WiFi network for street map downloads.

Trains are a big part of Ovi Maps 3.06. Train lines from subways and trams that run in over 80 cities around the world are now available. Opening up a transit map will show you all the nearby station, intersecting transit lines and which train is on what line.

Social networking is now integrated with a ‘Check In’ button. Just open Ovi Maps and hit the button to post to your social network of choice with a link to a map so your friends can see where you are. Facebook, Twitter, Friendster, LiveJournal, Hyves, studivz, Kaixin001 and RenRen are currently supported.

If you’d prefer not to go public with your location, you can privately alert a friend by selecting your location, click Share and choose between either SMS or Email. In addition to social networking, Ovi Maps 3.06 also includes people’s ratings of restaurants and businesses — making it easy to arrange your search results by best or closest.

The last big feature is Live Traffic. As seen in this video, Ovi maps helps you avoid traffic on the road and even see traffic over different time periods so you can choose the best time to plan your travels.

Overall Nokia’s Ovi maps 3.06 looks to be a stellar update. The new Ovi Maps 3.06 is available through the update feature on Ovi Suite or at Nokia Beta Labs.
