Honda’s new TV advert for “This Unpredictable Life’ will take augmented reality from the TV screen to your iPhone. Using “screen hopping” technology, this will be the world’s first app that allows characters from a commercial to transfer across another device with complete interaction.
Augmented reality on a smartphone is nothing new. However, unlike previous attempts in the field which use augmented reality markers and QR codes, “This Unpredictable Life” app is constantly listening to the commercial. The “screen hopping” experience uses advanced audio recognition technology to sync the app with the advert’s soundtrack, “allowing the user to interact with what’s happening in the ad in real time”.
If your reaction speeds and sharp eyes are up to the task, there are four characters to ‘catch’ from the ad. As you can see in the video above, simply swing your iPhone at the screen and you’re off. Here’s a breakdown of the characters and attributes:
- An evolving pet with a beautiful trail; shake your phone to choose the Rabbit, Cat or Parrot
- A playful Puppy that chases its own tail in different directions when you tickle his nose or tail
- A Space Monkey that pulls some crazy dance moves when you sing or play music into the phones microphone
- A Baby Balloon Head that lights up like a hot air balloon inflating when you blow into the bottom of the phone
Additionally, there are three mystery objects to be caught in the Vortex scene:
- A Lucky Cat that swings its arm for good luck when you tap it
- A Drum Kit that plays when you bang it
- A Monkey with symbols that crash when you tap it
Honda’s “This Unpredictable Life” app looks to build the buzz brewing for the Honda Jazz, one of the UK’s most popular small family vehicles. With roots in Swindon, Wiltshire, and over 220,000 car sold, Honda continues to lead the pack in innovative advertising technology. The app is free to download from the App Store, simply search “Honda Jazz – This Unpredictable Life”. The TV advert premieres on February 1st at 21.45 on ITV1 and Channel 4.
