Is the PSP 2 too big?

Yesterday we made a nifty chart showing the size of the PSP 2 in relation to other handheld gaming consoles like the Nintedo DSi XL, the original PSP and the iPhone 4 too. What it showed is that the PSP 2 is a whopper, but is it too big? One commenter pointed out that in childhoods far away in the 80s, handhelds were much bigger than the PSP 2, and as a ten year old, he still managed fine. What do you think? Is the PSP 2 too hefty, or are we too used to having super compact devices? Click and tell!

Most of the people I've seen use their PSP on the Tube, or out-and-about on the bus have been slightly older 21-30 yr old folk on their way to work, who will usually have a bag with them anyway. Pocket friendliness won't matter for many. PlayStation isn't about dinky portable gaming, it's about blockbuster experiences – think Uncharted. A smaller device wouldn't have suited Sony.

My thinking is that that blockbuster experience is just something not enough people want on the go anymore. They want quick casual blasts that are affordable because they can play them on the device they already own and carry around all the time – their phone. The PS3 caters itself for that experience when you're sat on the sofa – I think that's almost the PSP2's greatest threat.

Can't speak for all. But if you ever watch people on the train playing games on their iPhone. They play one game for about a minute, then switch it off and boot another up. They do this repeatedly. Personally I'd rather have a gaming experience that will last me my whole journey. If all handhelds, including phones had these quick blast experiences there would be little diversity, just a flock of Angry birds clones.

Indeed! I see your point completely – mine is whether or not there are enough of these people to justify the huge price the PSP 2 will inevitably require. Now more than ever, I suspect not.

I think the PSP2 is way too big and expensive.
The PSP Go, which goes for $90 used, is the superior product.
Especially with the all those emulators that run on it!
Next best thing would be the Xperia Play (though overpriced, like all smartphones)
    PSP2 is dead on arrival.
