The Sony PSP 2 will be the biggest handheld gaming console available when it launches late this year. It’s even bigger than the whopper that is the Nintendo DSi XL, and towers like a Goliath over the iPhone 4. Click through for the full size image, and take a closer peek at how the Sony PSP 2 stacks up next to its competitors.
The Sony PSP 2 clocks in at approximately 182.0 x 18.6 x 83.5mm. Its current official codename is the NGP (which stands for “next generation portable entertainment system”). The exciting thing about it though is what’s under the hood.
Under the skin of this hefty handheld, there’s a quad-core Cortex-A9 processor, and a quad-core Imagination Technologies PowerVR SGX543MP+ graphics processor. Translated, that means this is stupidly powerful. Add to that a screen that’s four times the resolution of the original PSP, and you’ve got yourselves the Bentley of handheld consoles, and using it will be like cruising that Bentley down open roads. It makes even the Nintendo 3DS look like a Ford Ka pootling around a multi-storey carpark in Milton Keynes.
Inside, the PSP 2 also has a 3D accelerometer, with gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass, plus similar tech to what’s used in PlayStation Move. Games will be digital only, downloaded with the 3G, Wi-fi and GPS connectivity.
All this power comes at a cost, of course: the Sony PSP 2 is gimongonormous. How big? Check out the graph below showing it versus its rivals held landscape style for gaming, and if you want a closer inspection, click the image for the full size version.
