BSkyB is reported to be on the brink of buying Wi-fi hotspot network The Cloud. If Sky succeeds, it will be able to offer a similar proposition to BT, who give broadband users access to BT Fon and Openzone hotspots out and about.

The Cloud currently claims to connect three million devices per month to its network of 22,000 hotspots in the UK, Germany and Sweden. If Sky add The Cloud to its portfolio it would have the added capacity to provide hotspot services to its 2.8m broadband customers, and would mean that competition with BT could really hot up.

Sky is not commenting on the rumour, which originated with The Sunday Times, but an earnings call is scheduled for later in the week, when we’re likely to hear confirmation about The Cloud buyout.
