The iPad 2 will include a proximity sensor to automatically unlock and lock the screen when a cover is removed or placed on the screen according to new claims. Evidence for the new feature is lurking in the iOS 4.3 beta with strings called PADCASELOCK and PADCASELOCK_FOOTER. The new commands would reside in the iPad 2 settings app giving users the ability to switch the feature on and off. The description of the setting says: “Automatically lock and unlock your iPad when you close and open the iPad cover.”
This would fit well with reports earlier this week that a buttonless iPad 2 is on the way. The iPhone 4 already uses a proximity sensor to lock its screen when placed against your ear.
