Some enterprising chap on eBay with the username jaybuysthings has worked out the identity of the artist Banksy. To clarify: he’s not got any Banksy artwork or anything like that, he’s just worked it out from tax records and now will give a piece of paper with Banksy’s real name on to the highest bidder. At time of writing, bidding has hit the £1m mark. Has everyone forgotten about the Daily Mail story outing Banksy as one Robin Gunningham?

The Mail story from 2008 was not confirmed or denied by Banksy’s agent, but there was more evidence to back up the claim in artwork depicting a rat with a gun. Unless the eBay auction is in fact being held by Banksy himself, then presumably Banksy’s agent will again refuse to confirm or deny the identity of his client.

More interesting than the identity of Banksy then might be the winning bidder: who bids £1m on eBay for the name of an artist on a piece of paper? If it’s a newspaper, we’ll hear about it soon enough, but it might be an art collector, or Banksy himself, keen to keep the secret. Whatever happens, if the name given through eBay can’t be corroborated, will the seller be breaking eBay rules?
