The Sony PSP 2 will be unveiled this month, according to a reliable industry publication. MCV says it’s got the when and where on the long awaited Nintendo 3DS rival, so read on for all the info.

Pencil it in to your diary: games trade magazine MCV UK says sources have confirmed the Sony PSP 2 will be unveiled on 27 January at a press event in Tokyo – by sheer coincidence, a year to the day that the Apple iPad was announced, and barely a month before the Nintendo 3DS goes on sale in the West.

No details on the hardware are given, but publishers, the report says, “were informed late last year of the plans”, and are already hard at work on titles for the Sony PSP 2.

We’ve contacted SCE for confirmation and while we’ve yet to hear back, we’re treating MCV’s report very seriously indeed as the publication’s sources never miss the mark, and it’s promising more insight on the Sony PSP 2 when the paper version of its magazine goes on sale on Friday. Stay tuned.

If the PSP2 looked like the picture in the article I would buy it in a heartbeat!

This mockup has been doing the rounds for years and it embodies exactly what a Sony portable gaming device should be, it's looks slick and is truly a thing of beauty.

Sadly and more realistically it will resemble the PSPGo, which means yet again Sony will have dropped the ball, if they mess it up this time don't even bother with another incarnation of the PSP. Apple will already have all your customers!

I rather fear you're right. Although it's worth noting that the PSP still does a storming trade in Japan off the back of Monster Hunter etc. Whether or not a PSP2 can stay relevant in the West remains to be seen.

I truly have high hopes for this. If they get it wrong this time Sony have all but killed the mobile gaming platform. Well in this type of incarnation anyway.

I think the future is cloud gaming. You purchase the games on PS3 network or whatever and can play them both on home console and mobile one. Maybe even your mobile phone at a push. The tech is definitely there for this.

If the aesthetics are right and the tech is sleek I may shell out for this. Lets hope it's a half decent offering.
