Google Voice launched a trial in August, giving free calls in the US via Gmail Chat. The original trial period was meant to last until the end of 2010, but now Google has announced that free calls in Gmail Chat will be extended for an extra 12 months.
Google said: “In the spirit of holiday giving and to help people keep in touch in the new year, we’re extending free calling for all of 2011.” That means that come the holiday season, a little fiddle with your Gmail settings means free calls to relatives and friends in the US. Google Voice in Gmail was meant to be just for making calls inside the US, but we found that just changing your location (and sacrificing UK spellcheck) meant that you could place calls into the US for free from the UK.
