The Mac App Store will open for business on 6 January – right in the middle of CES, the biggest tech trade show of the year. Will the Mac App Store  steal the thunder of some of the smaller companies hoping to get some attention at CES?

Apps on the Mac App Store will be free and paid, and categories will include Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity and Utilities. You can browse new and noteworthy apps, looks at what’s hot, and staff favourites. In short, it’s quite a lot like the Apple App Store for iOS we’re already familiar with.

“The App Store revolutionised mobile apps,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can’t wait to get started on January 6.”

There’s no info on what apps we’ll be seeing in the Mac App Store at launch. All that we can see from the holding page is that there’ll be a lot of Mac software, like Pages, iMovie and Garage Band.

Purchase in the Mac App Store is one click, and apps can run on all of your personal Macs. Updates are delivered directly through the Mac App Store, and it’s available to Mac OS X Snow Leopard users as a free download.
