Apple AirPlay is ace but it is limited, capable to slinging audio and video from Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch to an Apple TV, AirPort Express and the growing army of AirPlay-compatible speakers. But you haven’t been able to sling audio or video from your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad to a Mac with AirPlay…until now.Erica Sadun has created AirPlayer, an app that tricks your iPhone or iPod touch into believing that your Mac is in fact just a really porky Apple TV. The AirPlayer Mac App uses the Bonjour service and needs your iPhone/iPod touch to be hooked up to the same WiFi network as your Mac.
You don’t need to use an iPhone 4 jailbreak to use AirPlayer, it just sits on your Mac and works with the ordinary skills of your iPhone.
However, if you want to activate AirPlay video streaming from any iOS app to your Mac and have a jailbroken iPhone, there’s AirVideoEnabler in the Cydia store waiting to make that happen for you. We’ve tested AirPlayer with an iPhone 4 and a 13in Macbook Pro and it works great. Check out the video above to see it in action.
