djay
£11.99 iTunes
Where da party at? And phrases like it. If you fancy yourself as a master of the wheels of steel, someone who is able to “keep tha room jumpin’” by spinning a bewitching musical melange to an enraptured audience, then djay is the app for you. Not cheap, we know, but it turns the iPad into a pair of decks and a mixer, and essentially lets you play the DJ with your iTunes library. You can even bend the pitch, backspin a “record” and so on. Sessions can be recorded for future playback, or wirelessly transmitted to any AirPlay compatible device.
Pulse News Reader
£Free iTunes
The Pulse News Reader isn’t brand new – in fact it featured in Steve Jobs’ last WWDC keynote – but it went free a couple of weeks ago, and yesterday the latest version was released. Pulse News Reader is essentially a visual news app, turning your iPad’s screen into a vibrant mosaic of automatically updated articles. Version 2.1 adds iOS4.2 optimisation, an in-app video player and the ability to share stories via email or Facebook.
Rock Band Reloaded for iPad
£5.99 iTunes
The plastic instrument phenomenon arrives on the iPad, bringing with it 29 songs (including Nirvana’s “In Bloom” and Vampire Weekend’s “A-Punk”) and the ability to play guitar, bass and drums, plus (for the first time on iPad) sing. You can play solo, but assemble a crew of like-minded iPad-wielders and you can form a proper band, linking your tablets via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and collaborating to nail tunes band-style.
Project
£1.79 iTunes
It might be experiencing some teething problems, but Project is the most interesting digital mag to hit the iPad in a while. It features Jeff Bridges on the cover, for one thing. The brainchild of Richard Branson (and reportedly being run by his daughter Holly), Project is an interactive magazine that essentially evolves and updates throughout the month – breaking news, reader polls and blogs are added to it after purchase.
Battleship for iPad
£Free iTunes
Don’t let the lack of an S at the end fool you: this is Battleships by a (very slightly) different name. The classic game doesn’t hold any major surprises, but the fact that this app is free and fairly good-looking means we’re including it for our thriftier iPad-owning readers.
