Windows Phone 7: 135,000 devices sold? The mystery known as Windows Phone 7 device sales has finally moved out of the shadows of uncertainty. Using the powers of integrated Facebook app installation data, we are now confident that there are at least 135,000 active Windows Phone 7 devices in existence.

Up until today the closest we’ve ever come to Windows Phone 7 sales data was a market research source saying 40,000 units were sold in the US. Neither official nor confirmed, the sales data was questionable so we’ve really been hunting for a source to track down some concrete data.

We’ll admit, Facebook seems like an unlikely source, but given the accuracy of their “Monthly Active Users” we can confirm 135,134 Windows Phone users used the Facebook app on November 28. Granted, there could be plenty more Windows Phone 7 owners out there who have decided not to use Facebook, but we can assume the majority will and as a result we now have a minimum install base.

Before we go jumping the gun and forming detailed analysis based on this sales data it’s good to put Windows Phone 7 into some perspective. The $500 million advertising budget is a gradual push, Microsoft did not break the bank on day one, but instead opted for an incremental approach. As we reach the New Year, expect Windows Phone 7 advertising to increase rapidly and continue throughout 2011.

Windows Phone 7 was the first in many steps to help Microsoft return as a viable alternative in the smartphone landscape. The first generation devices are only a sampling of what platform has to offer — I mean, we don’t even have copy & paste or multi-tasking yet. For now, take the 135,134 device sales with a grain of salt.

Windows Phone 7: 135,000 devices sold?

There could be plenty more Windows Phone 7 devices roaming the globe, but using the low end of the Facebook App is a safe bet. We’ve given you the data, now it’s time for you to tell us what you think. Should Microsoft be worried about the number of sales? Is 135,134 more or less than you expected? Let us know!

It's all too late to save Windows Phone 7 from extinction.

We know there are 135,000 handsets out there. However, Microsoft bought all of its employees a handset, so that accounts for 90,000 of those. Dell bought its employees 30,000 handsets. The public (including developers) bought the remaining 10,000 handsets. The result is worse than what happened with Microsoft's previous phones, know as Kin phones.

you are talking b*llshit!! So how come I've got one and I don't work for any of these organisations? I think the commendator is talking b*llshit too. So this is 135,000 on a particular day. First, how does it register that it's from windows phone 7? then not everyone uses facebook everyday, this is a daily access figure, secondly, not everyone uses facebook altogether. I would say 50-60% may use it from all users. i am in the 40% who don't use facebook. I think a more realistic figure is around 500,000 to 1M. There are 15,000 developers!! Can it be that 1 in 30 users is a developer if it's 500,000 users?

Im surprised. I thought it would not have this many sales already. Much better than Windows Mobile sales.

I've been reading about WP7 for ages, and was curious to go play with one.

I visited at least 4 carphonewarehouse's and there wasn't a WP7 in any of them, even talking to the staff they didnt seem to know anything about them.

O2 had the phone i was most interested in (HTC HD7), i visited several branches of their stores, still not a single WP7 to be seen, although their staff were able to answer questions.

The only place i could find a WP7 was in Orange shops. Although they were static displays, and the staff weren't particuarly good.

It wouldn't supprise me if the UK sales were pathetic, not because the phone is good/bad, not because of the advertising (im seeing loads on TV, papers, etc), but because nowhere has them on show.

Its a shame, because having watched soo many videos online, read every review, etc. I bit the bullet, brought one as an upgrade for an old iPhone, and am absolutely loving it.

I have owned a HD7 since the end of october, not once have i logged in to facebook. i personally feel that WP7 as an o/s is very good for a 1.0 release. Provided Microsoft can now build on this, it can start to compete with Android and iOS in the not to distant future. The stand out feature for me is the Zune integration which is unique to WP7, Zune pass is genius! They should target in the marketing ads.

Not sure how you can interpret Facebook users for sales data, but I suppose not all of them are Microsoft employees (90,000) and not every new Windows Phone 7 user uses Facebook. But you'd see this as a minimum floor user number at best since the composition of MS employees using Facebook is also unknown.
