Not so fast Microsoft Kinect fans, the Sony Playstation Move has just trumped your 2.5 million units sold by 1.6 million. According to Sony, the Playstation Move has raked in 4.1 million units sold since launching in September. Now, how do you like them apples?
The past week has been filled with holiday gadget deals and equally impressive sales data from Nintendo, Microsoft and now Sony. Follow the announcement of 600,000 Wii consoles sold during the week of Black Friday and Microsoft selling 2.5 million Kinect motion sensors since early November, Sony has swooped in to steal the headlines.
The reported 4.1 million units sold comes from the controller bundle with Sports Champions and the 320GB Playstation 3 bundle. The race for motion controlled gaming is heated and despite the fierce competition from Microsoft and Nintendo, the Playstation Move seems to be holding its own. Quite surprising considering the added cost of additional Move controllers versus the controller free Microsoft Kinect.
With upcoming titles such as LittleBigPlanet 2 and Killzone 3, the sales of the Playstation Move should only continue to remain strong. Microsoft Kinect is favored in the next-gen motion control race, but we’d be ill-advised to count out Sony this early in the competition. Strictly looking at the numbers leads us to believe Kinect will outpace Sony, but holiday launch titles could heavily influence sales.
Now that we have the numbers in from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo it’s time to get your opinions. Do you think that the Microsoft Kinect sales of 2.5 million per month will continue at such an impressive rate, or will they level out? Is Nintendo still a contender in the motion gaming space or is the shelf life of the Wii rapidly declining? Sound off in the comments!
