Acer only launched its first tablets earlier this week, but already the manufacturer is coming with the big talk: it wants to be the biggest name in tablets within two to three years, pushing aside the likes of the iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab to seize the largest global market share.
The firm’s hopes to dominate the tablet market with its Android and Windows-powered models were outlined by Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci in an interview with Digitimes. Lanci sees Acer quickly establishing itself as a credible tablet rival to Apple and Samsung and gaining a 10 to 20 percent market share, then becoming the market leader over the next three years.
How? Well, Lanci says that Acer has distinct advantages over both Apple and Samsung. Apple, he says, is focussed on the US market and will continue to do well there, but isn’t as strong in other markets. Samsung, meanwhile, is primarily a consumer electronics company and lacks Acer’s computer-making and distribution savvy.
Lanci also points to the fact that Acer is making tablets in different sizes as another advantage it holds over its rivals. Earlier this week the company took the wraps off a trio of tablets: 10.1 and 7-inch Android tablets (both due April 2011) and a 10.1-inch Windows tablet (due February 2011).
It’s bullish talk from a company that is widely regarded as second tier in comparison to the likes of Samsung and Apple – but Acer certainly knows how to manufacture and distribute huge amounts of laptops and netbooks. If it can do the same with tablets, maybe it can achieve its aims.
