Advent Vega hacked to get Android Market, Google apps

UPDATE: And the instructions are live! You’ll need a PC and a bit of know how, but tell us how you get on if you’re feeling Advent-urous.

As Android tablets go, the Advent Vega requires something of a Faustian pact. Sure, you get high specs on the cheap, but you also don’t get Google’s core Android apps, including the Android Market so you can download many, many more. Except if you’re one enterprising hacker, you do! And he’s about to share the instructions.

User Paul over at the MoDaCo forums has managed to root his Advent Vega, and load it up with the Andorid Market, and all the core apps you’d hope for, like Gmail, Google Maps (and Navigation, though good luck without GPS) and the excellent Voice Actions. Paul says’s hes putting the instructions up today for others to try out, and you can bet we’ll be doing that with our own Advent Vega. Anything you want to know about it? Click here to see the unboxing and tell us!

Nice … thanks for the heads-up was just about to download the old appslib because it wasn't pre-installed by Advent on my new Vega but will now wait for this hack. Can you let me know when you have tested it out please Ben?

Hi Trevor. We're reviewing it as shipped at first – we don't rate products on their potential in the hands of knowledgeable programmers, rather than the experience they give the typical consumer out of the box. Once we've done that I'll see if I can get it up and running. You're better off hitting the Modaco forums for people's verdicts on how it fares in the meantime. Cheers!

Fair enough Ben. After reading the instructions for the hack I think I'll be leaving it well alone as I don't have the knowledge i.e. can't even find where to look to find the patch level I'm at as it doesn't show in the 'About Device' screen. Any ideas?

It's under Kernel version in the About Device screen, in between a lot of gibberish I can see mine is v1.03

done it myself – no computer skills needed all the info is there, dead simple. angry birds on such a big screen is a joy :-)

Anyone with a copy of the original memory card cause it looks like the one I got was corrupted so I'm curious as to what software should have come with the device.
