Chrome OS has been promised for yonks. The latest rumour was that Google wouldn’t get Chrome OS out this year after Eric Schmidt said at Web 2.0 that Chrome OS would be out in “the next few months” suggesting it won’t make it’s 2010 deadline. However, Google PR is now pushing a slightly less annoying line – Chrome OS is still coming this year but it’ll be a beta…


Techcrunch tracked down Google PR and got a vague and yet useful answer: “We’re not going into detail at this point…” That is a classic non-denial denial. Over in the hotbed of Chrome code that is the Chromium OS forums bugs seem to be being relentless sieved out and big issues are being killed.

All those bug reports and code rewrites do suggest that Google is still gearing up to get Chrome OS out in the next five weeks. That would suggest a Chrome OS beta rather than the full fat thing and we’re out of luck with the dream of Chrome OS netbooks right now.
