Advent Vega unboxed: Reader photos!

Exclusive: The Advent Vega Android tablet is shipping, even if only to a few people. See the proof: one of our readers has one, and has unboxed it for us on camera. Click through to see the gallery.

We’ve been keeping a close eye on the Advent Vega since launch – it promised to be one of the few low price Android tablets that’s also halfway decent. Unfortunately, the quick sellout of the first batch last week led to many disappointed shoppers, and even accusations that the stock never existed.

Well, it does: one reader who ordered an Advent Vega for a Christmas present for her daughter has received hers already. She managed to slip it out of the box for a quick photo session, and tells us that it’s “really easy to use – and I’m no comp whizz.”

We’re pressing for more details now, but doubters rest assured, the Advent Vega is real, and shipping now.

[Massive thanks to Angela for the photos]

Yeeeeeeha! … good for you Angela. Great pics and glad to hear we all may able to enjoy hugging our Vega soon. Let us know how you get on with it please.

I managed to get the Folio 100 the night before it went on sale at PC World… Was the first (so i was told) to contact Toshiba support re: flash not supported etc… it went back after 2 weeks as the kind manager at PC World let me play with it for a while. I did in fact want the Vega but settled for the Folio as I wanted it for a project.

I am not so sure if it did go on sale…I called PC world 5/6 days ago… I was told its on the website ready to ship… the very next day I was told by another that it had been withdrawn before it went on sale… I had been right on top of this and I would like to see more pictures… perhaps the date screen shot of the day they got it.

Finally got hold of my Advent Vega and and after a little play I struggled to put it away for Christmas. Everything about it is superb with the slight exception of the sound quality which, while acceptable, is a little tiny. The build quality is excellent, the tablet does feel a tad on the heavy side but that is a minor point, the capacitive touch screen is so responsive it even works through the protective covering and the response silky smooth. The screen is vibrant and graphics thanks to the Tegra 2 a joy to behold. The Accelerometer feels responsive and Android 2.2, while cut down, is quite intuitive and compliments the device well…. All in all very impressive.

Well got mine, happy that is works. Configured hotmail, copied a film across to check the playback, but the software crashes so can't do much other than use the native apps. Bugger! I keep getting USB_Detection crashing when launching the Advent Transfer Companion. Attempted to install on W7 x86, x64 and XP……….result failure!

Maybe I'll just ebay it and stick to my iPhone 4 or buy an iPad. Either that or wait for the next revision of Android…..these things should just work, not require a lot of faff. For now it will be collecting dust in a drawer…or maybe used as a giant coaster. Apple…I love you, never give up on providing a reliable/consistent platform.

I got mine yesterday… and the thing is nice, fast, but like… the OS is flawed. I think they've stripped away so much that it doesn't work properly. You can't select any of the Widgets without it crashing. The calendar doesn't work… it's a bit of a shame.

Though, running personally installed items works a treat.

  • Trevortheweather

Congrats to those who have received their Vega already still waiting for the postman to show here. Strange the basic widgets don't work but hopefully there is a route forward for Gingerbread upgrade. Has anyone checked this is possible yet?

  • DrunkenMessiah

Can someone who has received their Vega maybe let us know about viewing angles? Every other “cheaper” tablet I've seen reviewed has awful viewing angles and I really want this to be different.

Software issues I can live with (and hopefully fix) but hardware issues will mean I won't buy this.

    Thanks

  • Trevortheweather

Can someone who who has received a Vega also advise me if you received an 'order confirmation' by email before the Vega was delivered please?

    • Trevortheweather

Haha can answer my own question now as my Vega was delivered 2 hours ago and
Dixons did not email me an order confirmation beforehand. It looks good by the way and it was fully charged when it arrived so play can commence.

Got mine on Tuesday and it came fully charged. haven't had any isues with it at all. Really fast and responsive. Downloaded and installed appslib prog and have happily downloaded various apps. Though tried to install the avg antivirus app but it wont run!! Transfer via win7 64bit works well have transferred photos, avi films and mp3 albums. All work well with no probs. Touch screen very responsive to swipes. Have now ordered a 16GB micro sd card as can envisage running out of space as I transfer more music. Now need to source a suitable book type cover for it. Some on Ebay but dont know if correct size and asked for size info. Really pleased with it so far….. now what can I ask for for Xmas !!!!

    • Jenniferlucyallan

Hi Gerry! Thanks for dropping us a line, and glad to hear you're enjoying your new toy. It just goes to show that good gadgets don't have to cost the world!

Regarding the Advent Vega: It looks a nice bit of kit, but my question is; I have a large amount of media on my pc – photos, music and videos in various formats including Divx. will I be able to stream this wirelessly ( I aleady have a home network) to the Vega and be able to listen, view etc?
