Apple iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch has arrived! (Or rather, it’s arriving any minute now.) This is big news for the iPad, but not so much for the iPhone and iPod touch. Everyone’s favourite tablet is getting “over 100 new features”, including multitasking, folders, a unified inbox, and Game Center.
Sadly, if you’re outside the US, you won’t be able to get the TV rentals that US iPad users are getting with the iOS 4.2 update.
Game Center is now available across iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and there’s a new feature called AirPlay, which means you can hook up your mobile devices to your Apple TV, and play music, videos and photos wirelessly from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, and it will also extend to AirPlay enabled speakers that are “coming to market in the months ahead”
It’s not just fun and games though, executive additions for iOS 4.2 include AirPrint, which means you’ll be able to print direct form your Apple device, providing you’re using an AirPrint enabled device of course.
Steve Jobs fronted on the raft of Android tablets, and said: “Once again, the iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit.”
Apple’s warned that “some features may not be available on all products”, such as multitasking, which requires an iPhone 4 or 3GS, or iPod Touch.
