Last week we reported that the Toshiba Folio 100 didn’t actually come pre-loaded with Flash 10.1 support as had been advertised (although this information was apparently marked on the box), and now Electricpig has found out that the Toshiba Folio 100 Flash plugin download that’s been provided as a stop gap isn’t even available yet.

Graeme Simons, Toshiba Business Manager for Northern Europe, said: “The plan is that the Flash 10.1 plugin will be available by 10th November latest – that’s this Wednesday.” Use of the word “plan” and the back story here leaves us reluctant to take this as a definite Wednesday launch for the Toshiba Folio 100 Flash plugin though.

Flash isn’t in the device because Toshiba “didn’t want to delay the initial product, and wanted to get it out in time for Christmas”. It seems the result of pushing the device out early and incomplete is a neat bunch of disgruntled customers who’re wishing they’d waited, or bought something else instead. John said: “Toshiba has got 1 week to release Flash otherwise mine is going back to the shop. If I wanted the internet without Flash I would have bought a iPad!”, and one commenter said they’d taken theirs back for a refund already.

Toshiba says “if any customers are asking about the Flash update then they can register to receive an update on when it becomes available using the link to the right of this page”.

Has Toshiba shot itself in the foot? Are you one of the unhappy customers? Drop us a line in the comments and tell us what you think about Tosh’s Flash fail…

I'm thinking they rushed it as the ROM on the Folio was signed with test keys

Oh yes .. And that too .. I mean, what were they thinking?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=620300204 Joe Walters

Ouch .. What a mess .. I debated getting one instead of waiting for the Vega, but held off .. Glad I did, ontop of all of this the launcher is awful, the screen is abysmal, It's laggy and it is about as stable as Sienna Miller.

they also forgot to make the screen usable too!

Screen is fine. I am typing on it right now. I bought one and dont mind waiting a couple of days for flash. Over all experience is ok, most of these tabs as going to have some bugs as android is not the ideal operating system for larger tabs. Multi touch is not working on the browser yet also hit and miss with some of the video codecs. Hdmi output is working, browsing the internet is very good even without flash. Just waiting for some one to hack it for full android market. Pop down to pcworld and have a play with one.

    • OL_TRON

That was three weeks ago dude. Still waiting.

I popped to Currys to play with one. That's where I drew my judgment of it. These were my initial thoughts on it and the screen viewing angle was really hard to deal with. Add to that the sluggish responsiveness of the screen and the buttons i'm sorry to say that it really out me off this tablet

  • Checkpointcharlie

I like mine solid piece of kit typing this as we speak, major plus is the screen it's lush, only neg is its a bit heavy..

  • chris

I like mine too. Was very close to taking it back with the Flash debacle (still think Toshiba are very cheeky!) but since I have installed a better launcher (launcher pro) it is much better now. If Toshiba can sort the flash out and get a few of the software bugs sorted (who's screen comes on from sleep randomly?) then it could be really good. The viewsonic Gpad in the states is based on the Tegra2 kit and that has a market hack out for it already. I would wager that if most of the people who have 'played with it in store' and disliked it had a look at mine they would feel differently about the device – it is like a new machine! (Flash and screen angles aside)

The flash situation is a huge dissapointment.i have opted for the email to inform me for the update but i dont hold my breath. Seems to me its just a big con to get quick cash of customers prior to xmas. Small print on box say it supports 10.1. What a cop out. My 2 go back in one wk if no response

  • Sampsonij

I had one and took it back for the following reasons
    1. Sluggish response. Sometimes it would take 2 or 3 key presses to get it to respond. This was a major failure as far as i was concerned as it made it unusable.
    2. Lack of a calendar. It syncs nicely with my exchange server but there is no way of seeing your calendar. I cannot see how they forgot this
    3. Wifi was very bad. 15m from the base station and it was getting less than 1Mbps and often dropping the connection. My Blackberry 9700 has no problems in exactly the same spot
    4. Lack of flash. They rushed this out

Other than these serious issues all associated with software the unit was very good and I was sad to have to return it.

Half way through the 10th – still flashless! still go 12 or so hours………..

Looks like no flash today…. downloaded an app called slideme which gives you access to a couple of thousand apps. Will do until it is hacked so the android store can be used. Really starting to like this tab. Got to take into account 2.2 or any current versions of android are not 100% fool proof. Going to be some teething troubles but would say that this is 80% there to be being better than an ipad. Again think this machine is very responsive. Not having any problems with the screen. Maybe it must be my fingers lol.

They've got till Friday and then this goes back. Its utterly deceptive the way they've released this to fool people into thinking it can do Flash….

  • Karkaucheung

Just bought my folio this morning at 12pm at first was very happy when turning on, but once you start using it there is no android market -but you can install one ! very similar .

the real disappointment was no flash i use flash and the only reason why i did not buy the ipad.

the second dissappointment was no 3g (i know price has been taken into account)

but wanted to put a payugo sim with internet to use it so im going to return mine and buy samsung tab although its smaller but it has the 2 important things i want.

We also received such Folio 100 and can not use YouTube or any other page with Flash content. Unfinished product such Folio 100. A download for Flash 10.1 plugin for Folio is not available ( not yet ). Should rather have bought another tablet pc. Folio 100 comes also without Android Market and Toshiba Market place which is installed has almost no content or it does not work at all. Means you get a tablet but you are limited to install a few mostly useless apps from Toshiba Market place. They wrote Toshiba market place should contain apps especially for 10″ screen size of such Folio 100 but what they have is some apps mainly made for small mobile phones. Totally useless for for Folio 100. More than dissapointing they Toshiba releases such unfinished product. Never again a Toshiba product.

Still no Flash….The Fail turns EPIC!

  • Chris

One of the French members on the XDA forums (folio thread) has said that Toshiba France has tweeted that it will be available on the 15th – If it is not, mine is going back.

I do quite like it but the flash issue is too much.

To be fair, this flash problem is affecting all tegra2 devices (Archos101 and Viewsonic Gpad) – but I do not like the way Toshiba has handled this launch, they have a few days to sort this or they will have another folio to sell on as refurbished and will have lost my custom forever.

  • Chris

Some people have just reported that a flash download is available – still marked as beta! Mine is showing no updates available?

    • AJR

Yep flash is showing in the service centre app as an update… marked as a beta but working great with YouTube, iPlayer and other sites …..

      • Matthias

Cannot see it in service center, maybe different from country to country

  • Chris

    Link to MoDaCo forum;
    android.modaco.com/content-page/322155/toshiba-folio-100-rooted-no-market-yet/page/80/

This shows a screen grab from PC Worlds in store system – it's official the Folio is effectively withdrawn. Nice one Toshiba – way to launch a product!

  • OL_TRON

Couldn't give any help when called tech services. Absolute rubbish. Don't go near it….argh so infuriated. LIARS!!! FLASH DOESN'T WORK

  • Lenny
