The Toshiba Folio 100 is available from this week, but (and it’s quite a big but) without Flash. We’ve been on the blower to Toshiba for an explanation, after one reader tipped us off that he’d bought a Toshiba Folio 100, only to find that there was no Flash.

Graeme Simons, Toshiba Business Manager for Northern Europe, said that people digging deep for a Toshiba Folio 100 would have to go to the Toshiba Marketplace to install Flash.

But why? Simons said: “We didn’t want to delay the initial product, and wanted to get it out in time for Christmas. We couldn’t get Flash in in time…This quarter will be one big production run.” Flash will be come preloaded on to the Toshiba Folio 100 in the second production run, which will be at some point early next year, but until then, you’ll have to stump for the Flash-less version.

Simons also said that the packaging was labelled with the info that Flash was not pre-installed, but Tosh have not been open about it until now, and have advertised and pushed Flash 10.1 support on the Toshiba Folio 100 from the get go.

Have you bought a Toshiba Folio 100? How much of a hassle is it to install Flash 10.1? Drop us a line in the comments and let us know!

[Thanks Chris!]

I read on a forum that you were supposed to get flash from the Toshiba marketplace but it wasn't ready yet so even though it doesn't come with flash you still can't install it either

  • john

just got Toshiba Folio 100? today and cant find Flash.to install in Toshiba Marketplace can you help cant get a refund back from currys

  • darren

ive so far been unable to find flash installer on toshiba market not happy at all

  • SJ

Took mine back for refund – such a poor experience. Flash is not ready and you must register on the Toshiba Website for an update alert when it is. There has been no indication of timescales either, you could be waiting till 2011. I think Toshiba have shot themselves in the foot by rushing the device to market, the screen response wasn't that hot either.

    • Chris

Thinking of doing the same. Very cheeky of them – big selling point of this device is the Tegra2 with flash. Who did you buy from, and did you have any problems returning it?

      • SJ

Bought from Currys and returned through a Currys/PCWorld outlet with no questions asked… Actually, the guy in store didn't even check inside the box – they must have had others returned for same reason I'm guessing.

Just on my Folio. So disappointed with the lack of flash. Tried a few flash installs for android but they dont work. Apparently it needs a special version with it having a dual core cpu. Toshiba has got 1 week to release it otherwise mine is going back to the shop. If i wanted the internet without flash i would have bought a iPad…!

Would you consider a Galaxy Tab, or is it too pricey for the size?

      • John

        Hi Ben,

I like the look and feel of the Galaxy, just far too pricey.

Might see what the vega is like, apparently in stock at PC World on the 18th.

For now its going back to the store, then tomorrow buy CoD Black Ops, and hopefully happy days.

John, bad news indeed. we were told by Toshiba that the flash was a simple install, but you and a couple of other readers have pointed out that this isn't the case. How do you find the rest of the device (the bits that don't need flash!)?

      • Jenniferlucyallan

Jon, we've chased abut the flash plugin, here's what Tosh had to say:

      • John

Hi, I found the rest of the device ok. Couldn't do a couple of things. First was that I couldn't find how to get it connected to my media server for streaming DLNA content. Second, I couldn't access network shares as easily as I thought.

I was sat there last night playing and in the end I thought £330 to do what I can do on my laptop is a lot to pay. Its going back to the shop, if Flash was on from day one I'd be happy on Youtube, etc but since it isn't I've seen the Tab's for what they are. An poor replacement for a laptop.

        Nice, but expensive…

We've chased up with Tosh abotu the lack of flash and the subsequent lack of a plugin. Take a look at what they had to say:

re Toshiba Folio: I bought one on the basis of having the flash player installed and am disappointed that it isn't. There is a link on the Toshiba Multimedia website to download it but when you try it isn't available. Couldn't find it in Toshiba Marketplace. Very disappointed. Any further news as to availability would be appreciated. Fred Pearson

Fred, we're chasing this. The Flash update was meant to be out Wed, but since we don't have a Folio here we can't check whether that happened for sure, and Tosh have not got back to us, despite phone calls and emails on our part. We're hoping to get a response asap today, so stay tuned!

One of the French members on the XDA forums (folio thread) has said that Toshiba France has tweeted that it will be available on the 15th – If it is not, mine is going back.

I do quite like it but the flash issue is too much.

To be fair, this flash problem is affecting all tegra2 devices (Archos101 and Viewsonic Gpad) – but I do not like the way Toshiba has handled this launch, they have a few days to sort this or they will have another folio to sell on as refurbished and will have lost my custom forever.

  • Chris

Some people have just reported that a flash download is available – still marked as beta! Mine is showing no updates available?

    • Bryan

Bought mine as soon as it was out, the lack of flash is a BIG issue. Yep, 10th November came and went, still no flash. Registered as requested in the flyer which explained in very small writing that the Flash Player wasn't available. No email from Toshiba, neither is the flash player available on the 'Toshiba Market', so I'm still waiting in hope that one day this device will work as advertised. The lack of access to the Android Market is also a problem as currently the 'Toshiba Market' is woefully inadequate in its supply of applications. If they don't get the player out soon, the rush to get it out before Xmas will be wasted because no-one will buy one due to the bad publcity, which is a shame because it really is a good device

    Link to MoDaCo forum;

This shows a screen grab from PC Worlds in store system – it's official the Folio is effectively withdrawn. Nice one Toshiba – way to launch a product!
