Google has estimated that the UK internet industry is worth £100bn, putting it above the UK construction industry. That converts to 7 per cent of national income. The high figures are mostly driven us Brits doig a lot of online shopping. Paul Zwillenberg, one of the report’s authors, said : “As a proportion of retail sales, [online transactions] are high. The UK is punching above its weight.” Some folks over on Twitter (including Evan Davies) have expressed scepticism about the high figure though, and are wondering whether there in a confusion in the figures, or the way they’re being presented.

Virgin Media launched its 100Mb cable broadband in the UK just yesterday, but already rival ISP BT has weighed in with a spot of  criticism, saying it was “surprised by the high price” of Virgin’s superfast service.

Kinect: the Oprah effect

When Oprah gave away a Microsoft Kinect to every member of her final show audience last week, a room full of American women erupted in deafening squeals of delight. While a) a Kinect is definitely not as good as being flown to Australia by John Travolta, or b) not quite what you’d expect when you gave a room full of Oprah fans gaming consoles, it did a good thing for Kinect.

The Advent Vega budget Android tablet we showed you a couple of weeks ago has had its release date pushed back. After some questions from readers on Twitter, we’ve checked in with Advent on the release date, to see if the 1 November date we got then still stands. Sadly though, this is no longer the case. If you’re itching to get your hands on the Advent Vega, you’ll be waiting another two weeks, as Advent has just told us the release date has been pushed back a fortnight to 14 November.
