At the launch of Windows Phone 7 yesterday, we asked Microsoft what we can expect to see from the app marketplace when Windows Phone 7 devices start getting into the hands of consumers on 21 October. Alex Reeve, who heads up Windows Phone 7 in the UK, was reluctant to give us any solid figures on the number of apps that would be available at launch, but said evasively that it was “a lot”.
The Samsung Omnia 7 is the South Korean gadget giant’s first foray into Windows Phone 7 in the UK, and it’s packed with all the power to match the Android flavoured Samsung Galaxy S. You’re looking at a gorgeous 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen, 1GHz processor and five megapixel camera, all wrapped up in a slick metal casing. Continuously updated.
Well, look at this: Yahoo Messenger has joined the growing ranks of apps that offer 3G video calls on the iPhone. What’s more Yahoo has enabled a feature that means you can make 3G or Wi-Fi video calls between a Mac or PC and your iPhone. Come on Steve Jobs, it’s already time for that FaceTime refresh, the third-party apps are beating it…
While Windows Phone 7 has well-received, Microsoft has no plans to plonk it into tablets. According to Greg Sullivan, senior product manager at Microsoft, the megacorp will stick with Windows 7 tablets. He reckons that the full-fat OS offers better touch-support and a richer application experience. We’re more than a little disappointed…
