Apple has been making a big noise over the resolution-to-size ratio of the iPhone 4′s lovely Retina display screen, but there could be an even sharper phone display on the way: a 4.8-inch 1920 x 1080 screen from tech unknowns Ortustech.
This 1080p TFT LCD screen crams in 458 pixels per inch, compared to the iPhone 4′s 326 pixels per inch. That’s crazily sharp – in fact we’d be surprised if the naked eye can even distinguish the increase in detail. It also supports 16.77 million colours and a 160 degree viewing angle.
Apparently Ortustech – a joint venture between Casio Computer and Toppan Printing – reckons the 1080p screen could be used for HDTV monitors, but would anyone really want to watch a TV just 4.8 inches wide? As for mobile phones and other mobile devices? Well, we could see it on an ultra-expensive gadget, but it’s probably overkill for even a high end smartphone – in other words, we don’t think it’s giving Apple any sleepless nights. Still, we’ll keep an eye out for more developments.
