iOS 4.2 is coming to the iPad soon, and it’s going to change the tablet’s orientation lock switch (that dinky clicker on the side panel) to a mute switch. But what if you’ve grown accustomed to using this slider as a rotation lock and want to keep it that way? Hard cheese, says Steve Jobs – it’s going to be a mute switch and that’s the end of it.

One brave 9to5Mac reader shot this question to La Jobs via email: “In iOS 4.2 for iPad is the switch on the side going to be the mute and not screen orientation lock from now on?”

To which he received this typically to-the-point Steve Jobs reply: “Yep. Sent from my iPhone”.

After asking if Apple planned to make the iPad switch function a changeable option, the reader was treated to the following slice of Jobsian terseness: “Nope. Sent from my iPhone”.

Steve Jobs didn’t feel the need to elaborate, or talk about why Apple has decided its users don’t get to choose what function the iPad’s side switch fulfils, and some critics might feel that’s hardly surprising given Apple’s usual “Nanny knows best” approach. Still, we suppose one way to keep its orientation lock functionality intact is, well, not to update your iPad to iOS 4.2 when the update hits in November…

Stevie boy brings a whole new meaning to the word “choice”, I love Apple products but I hate that man's attitude with a vengeance. Makes me think of a quote one of my old bosses used, after about 3 hours of debate he would say – “lets compromise and do it my way” nothing changes in the hallowed halls of Cupertino.

This strikes me as being quite strange especially as many reviews had mentioned how sensitive the screen rotation was and all seemed to praise the inclusion of this switch to lock it as being a really good thing. So does this mean they have fixed the sensitivity of the screen rotation or is that going to start really annoying users now i would of thought muting your device would be used less then the locking the screen rotation. Oh well i suppose if you buy into Apple you just have to accept Steve knows whats best for you just hope his right.

I think it's just that the rotation lock is now on the multitasking bar on screen when you double tap the home button.

To lock the screen location you can double-tap the home button. Then swipe your finger from right to left in the task bar (where the open apps live). This reveals a lock button, Bingo.

Oh yeah, that's as easy as flipping a switch. How do I undo the 4.2 update? I tried restoring my backup and tried restoring factory settings. 4.2 persists.

Wow – that is fantastic, never would’ve known that was there (it’s actually swipe left to right on my iPad), it has iPod controls there too – thanks for posting.
