Nullsoft has released the beta of WinAmp for Android. Although a name associated with the early days of PC MP3 listening, the Android incarnation packs some surprisingly modern features.

Before iTunes came to dominate the desktop music player scene, WinAmp was the player of choice for many Windows users.  The creation of an Android version may sound like an odd bit of retro computing, but there are some features here that more modern MP3 players could do well to watch.

Playlist management is one – unlike many Android players WinAmp lets you add to and view a current playlist so you can see what is coming up. You can also long press a track and search for it on Google, YouTube or Google Listen

The standout feature, though, is WiFi sync. If you download the special beta version of the desktop app you can sync both playlists and you music library to your phone. We are still trying to confirm if this will work over the internet or if you need to be on the same LAN as the PC running the beta.

Oh, and it still plays that “It really whips the Llama’s ass” sample when you start it up, just like the desktop version. Some things never change.

How is this a big deal? I've been using Syncables' WiFi sync on my Droid for a while now…I back up my contacts on the regular and also sync all of my pictures between my Droid and my computers. Pretty sure I have it set to sync three times per day or something…I don't even think twice about it, and have access to all of my important stuff on each of my computers, ya know? Syncables is sophisticated, but frankly quite simple software. I'd stick with that.

By the way, screw Steve Jobs and his “Google isn't open argument!” Am I right? Big hugs to all of us Android peeps everywhere.
