The new Apple TV box has been shown to be vulnerable to another jailbreak method – the Chronic Dev Team’s Greenpois0n. This must mean we are due some apps, right? Right?

Apple TV has just been jailbroken again, according to a pic found in a tweet by iOS hacker p0sixninja. This appears to show a new Apple TV box running the latest Greenpois0n jailbreak exploit, which should mean that the iOS-powered set-top box can start running apps – both custom built ones and those intended for the iPad and iPhone.

Not so fast, though. While it is true that Apple TV runs on iOS there are at least two problems with getting apps to run on it. Firstly, the screen resolution is unlike that of any other iOS device. The iPad got around this problem with a ‘legacy mode’ that could run iPhone apps in a window, or expanded to fit the larger screen. It is not known if the Apple TV version of iOS will support this.

More importantly, there is the problem of control. All the iOS devices we have seen so far use touch input. Apple TV on the other hand uses a remote control – the two control methods are different enough that it will take some extremely clever coding to make things work. More than likely, a touch device like the Magic Pad or even an iPod Touch would be required as an additional input device.

So, don’t plan on playing Cut The Rope on your flat screen just yet, but its a good bet that if Apple don’t figure this out soon then someone from the jailbreaking community will have a crack at it..
