Twitter is planning its next big feature now new Twitter is out in the world – Twitter Events. Ev Williams and Biz Stone outline the new plan at event in San Francisco and it sounds like the new feature could put an end to bashing out hashtags when you want to join in with talking about a particular event. The big question is: will Twitter class X-Factor as an event?!
Twitter Events, which is in the works right now, will create an event-specific group of tweets. The benefit of Twitter Events seems to be that it would begin the slow death of the hashtag, meaning you’ll be able use all 140 characters to express your brilliant thoughts.
It seems Twitter Events will allow you to tie your tweet to a particular event by associating it with a number of keywords. Other keywords may also be auto-added by Twitter itself if it recognises your event. Presumably it’ll be able to tie-in to Twitter location features too.
Biz Stone explains Twitter Events: “It’s something we’ve been talking about forever…Twitter electrifies events. You’re connected to it, in this matrix. You want to be connected to it, if you’re there but if you’re not there, you don’t want to hear about it…and in a short time it’s gone.”
That idea that Twitter Events might be easily hidden in your timeline will be music to the ears of people sent batty by X-Factor tweets or Apprentice commentary filling their Tweetdeck window.
