Well, look at this: Yahoo Messenger has joined the growing ranks of apps that offer 3G video calls on the iPhone. What’s more Yahoo has enabled a feature that means you can make 3G or Wi-Fi video calls between a Mac or PC and your iPhone. Come on Steve Jobs, it’s already time for that FaceTime refresh, the third-party apps are beating it…
Though the new iPod touch comes packing FaceTime smarts, we’re still waiting for Apple to bake the tech into iChat or create a PC application to support the feature. In the meantime, Yahoo Messenger 2.0 can do it already offering free calls from the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and new iPod touch to Macs or PCs.
The Yahoo Messenger 2.0 iPhone app gives you video calls over 3G but recommends you do them over Wi-Fi (we agree – check out our look at FaceTime 3G call costs). Reviews of the Yahoo Messenger app aren’t amazing with some folk complaining about video chat issues but it’s free and definitely worth playing with.
With more and more third-party apps adding 3G video calling and now iPhone 4/iPhone 3GS to PC and Mac calling, hopefully Apple will speed up the rollout of more FaceTime features which it is no doubt hard at work on.
If you’ve tried the Yahoo Messenger app, let us know what you think of it in the comments. And tell us: are you still using FaceTime or has the fad faded?
