An Amazon app store is definitely on the way, as prospective developers received a welcome pack from Amazon, which outlines details  developers details about how to upload to the Amazon app store.

The Amazon App Store will only be dealing with Android apps, according to the welcome pack, but this could change in the future. DRM will be down to the choice of the developer, and there’s some content guidelines too, which, although vague, give you an idea of what Amazon doesn’t want cluttering up its app store:”offensive content”. Amazon hasn’t gone into detail about this, but says that what it will find offensive is “about what you would expect”.

From this set of rules and guidelines it seems Amazon is trying to impose structure and control to its Android marketplace. Is it stepping in to be the Apple of the Android app marketplace? Amazon will be starting to accept app submissions in a couple of weeks. Right now all that can be submitted are promotional materials. This suggests though, that the Amazon app store is not too far away, and could be with us in a matter of months.
